Chango, Chango, Chan-go!
The Princess read a story at school about a little boy who's family ran a bakery. Her teacher made one of the recipes and brought it to school. The Princess LOVED it and raved about it all week. She begged and pleaded for us to make them.
Sunday night we went to town. I am usually leery of recipes that come out of books, but I have to say, we were pleased with this one and we will be making them again.
Since the cleaning fairies have left, I have been letting her become more involved in activities like this. She did the majority of the work. I had to let her know things like when the eggs and brown sugar were sufficiently creamed and the batter at the end was pretty thick and so I scraped it into the pan for her. Other than that, she did this on her own.
I almost cried because she is becoming so grown up. And then I remembered that I can't make a chocolate chip cookie to save my life and that she will be able to take over the cookie making soon. So then I threw a party.
Next she wants me to try the bagels that she had in her book. I don't know that I am THAT brave yet.
Chango Bars from the book "Jalapeno Bagels"
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup margarine
2 cups brown sugar
3 eggs
2 1/3 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup mixed nuts (we toasted some pecan gems and used about 2/3 of a cup)
Melt butter and margarine. While this is melting, cream brown sugar and eggs, then add melted butter and margarine. Combine flour, baking powder and salt and stir into sugar mixture. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts. Pour mixture into a greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes at 350 degrees F.

You would give me one more yummy thing that I am going to have to try! They sound delicious!
And I have an idea...How about if we teach our daughters to cook, then in a couple of years they can take turns making dinner for both families. Then we just need to hire maids (or train the younger ones) and we are FREE to PLAY! I love it. I knew I was smart to have four kids.
That is impressive! Need a sampler?...I mean taster?...I mean...babysitter!
Awww.. how sweet!! That seems just like me as a kid! I loved experimenting.. And most of the time, they didn't come out well. But I'm so thankfull for my parents letting me experiment. I learned sooo much from that time!
Yummy!!! It is great she is starting her cooking lessons so young.
Do you remember Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise cake? I still have the recipe somewhere. This reminded me of that.
So cute! Just make sure she doesn't get the baking powder and baking soda mixed up. We have a problem with that at our house. That's our little Soda Cakes!
YUMMY! That is a recipe that our family has made since forever! I am jealous...maybe I should whip up a batch tomorrow!
The Princess is so adorable in that photo! She looks so grown up!
Sounds yummy!
J loves to cook too. She's always in the kitchen with me wanting to help.
They grow up so fast! What an awesome girl to make that on her own! She'll be over-flowing with talent if she's anything like her mom! ;)
Looks yummy! I'll have to try it.
"So then I threw a party" :D YAY!! Of course you did.
To tell you the truth when I read the title of the dish ("spider monkey")I was like hmmm, but now that I read the whole post and ingredients I think I'll give it a try!
Those look yummy! And how fun that she is helping in the kitchen and enjoying to bake--I remember making "blonde brownies" when I was around her age, and loving that mom let me do it. :)
Some of my best memories are of baking in the kitchen with my mom. Hmmmm, maybe I should remember to do this with my own girls. Sounds like fun!
