My Life Monday...The Name Game
I am LOVING Rachelle's My Life Monday Segments. Easy post topic, right? This week she said
My parents named me __________ because . . . Tell us about your name. Do you like it or dislike it? Would you name yourself something else? Does your name fit you? Share all your thoughts and feelings on your name.
My parents named me Stephanie L--. I have asked my mom the significance of my name before. Originally they had picked out Sarah and Kevin when they were first married, but I had an aunt that had named her baby Sarah a few years before. She said they thought I was a boy and so they were planning on Kevin. Well, I wasn't a boy and so I am not Kevin. It was a name they liked and so they went with it. I was born when "Stephanie" was at the height of it's popularity. Because of this I graduated with a few other "Stephanie's", two of them with alternate spellings. I think there was a total of 7 "Stephanie's" attending my high school. My middle name is after my mom's best friend at the time I was born. I-- L--. I don't think my mom has talked to Ida in 10 years. Note to self...don't name kids after friends.
I have never really given much thought to my name other than when I was in school with the snooty Stephanie's. They weren't very nice and I hoped that I wasn't the same way. It definately isn't my favorite name, but it isn't the worst name out there either.
I don't know if I would change it. Other than it being overused and a little boring, I don't have a problem with it. Also, I think I would have a hard time deciding what to go with. I like traditional, not-used-very-often names. I don't know what I would choose.
I am Stephanie, Steph, Stephie, and by my friends teasing husband, Fannie.

LOL. I never thought of fannie as a nickname for Stephanie.
I know what you mean about the snobby part of the name. I think a big majority of the Stephanie's I went to school with were all stuck up.
But then there were those few that were sweethearts.
I never thought of Fannie as a nn for Stephanie either. The snobby Stephanie's reminded me of the movie "The Heather's". Your name is a great name! Thanks for participating again!
How cool!

I actually like the name Fannie! But, then I'm into old fashioned names. I think Stephanie is nice name, with only pleasant connotations. I guess there have been no stuck up Stephs in my past.
Every Stephanie I've ever known has been fun and bubbly! So I LOVE Stephanies! Yay for your name!! LOL
Stephanie is a pretty common name, but all the ones I know have been really nice. Never thought of Fannie as a nickname though. I'll have to try it out on my neighbor.
One of my best friends that I met in kindergarten and I still keep in touch with today is named Stephanie. She is very nice :-) There were a lot of stephanies I knew growing up (very late 70's and 80's). But I just realized that I haven't known anyone since I started having children to name their girl Stephanie, and I don't think my daughter has had any Stephanies in her classes.
My friend used to spell her name for fun ~ Stefaknee to make herself stand out from all the other Stephanies.
I think it is one of those names that has outlived is usefullness (Jennifer anyone). Maybe it will resurface in 60 years. They have a tendency to do that. I only know of ONE Stephanie that is under 25. She is on my dd's soccer team and she was named after someone her mom knew that had passed away.
FANNIE! That cracks me up!
Great story! Thanks for visiting my site.
OK that is adorable. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing! It is fun to see where those names our parents picked for us come from.
Thanks for sharing. I really like the name Stephanie. This has been fun and interesting on Mondays to learn about everyone.:)
Fannie? Ok - you should elaborate ont hat one!
And, I've never met a Steph or Stefanie I didn't like! ;)
We were having a couples game night and he teases everyone. Someone asked me if I prefered Steph or Stephanie. I told them either was fine. He sat there and then he said "I will call you Fannie." And he has ever since.
I know snobby Stephs too...but you don't sound like one at all.
That was so fun to read. I really have not cool story about how my parents picked my name. It was just a name they liked.
so glad you're not one of the snooty ones. Fannie cracks me up.
LOL... Note to self...don't name kids after friends
I have never heard of that working out well. I don't know if I knew snobby Stephanie's, Stacy was the snobby name at my school, Stephanies were the sweet girls.
Fannie?! Yowza! That's better than some of the nick names I have had in the past!
Great MLM post!
(Note to self: watch "The Heathers")
PS: I had a friend named Stephanie in elementary and middle school. We still talk now and she went through a...phase - but I think she's redeemed herself in becoming a pretty nice gal. (And she's under 25, barely - 24!)
PPS: How funny is it we both titled blog entries "The Name Game"?
I'll tell you, it's pretty funny.
I like the name Stephanie all the ones I knew weren't snobby. And, I love the "don't name your kids after friends names"!
BTW - thanks for visiting my site. I'm always looking for new ones to add to my bloglines. I'll have to get caught up on your blog!
Fannie, I get it Steph"Fannie". Never heard of that before!
It's funny how names go in cycles. When we had our first, we named her Heather - A TOTALLY UNIQUE name. In our whole lives Papa & I had only known 1. When she was 6 weeks old, they split our ward and there were 7 Heathers in it. When she was about 20 and working her way through college. Someone called her office. When she identified herself as Heather, he said, "You're under 25 aren't you? There are no Heathers over 25."
I finally got my name post up. 2 days late, but oh, well.
