Halloween Good Eats

I am really struggling with this post. Not because it is emotional or because it is too close to my heart. None of that. I just know that once I post this, I am going to have to walk away from my computer and throw up. Not just now, but every time I see this post.

You see, it was my mom's annual Halloween dinner last night. Not the comfy chili, scones and apple cider we have on the actual day of Halloween. Nope, this dinner is the annual "see what things you can make as gross as humanly possible" dinner.

I was in charge of the vegetable. I racked my brain over and over about what I could make that was gross. After much deliberation I came up with lab rat brains drenched in blood (broccoli and cauliflower with cheese sauce--dyed red).

So, for your viewing pleasure...or pain, our Halloween dinner in all it's glory...um...I mean grossness.

For the appetizer we munched on mummy toenails and bat poop.
For the main dish we were served:

Wrapped Mummies

Lab Rat Brains Drenched in Blood

Coagulated Vampire Blood with an Insect Infestation

Oh, and how could I forget the thing that made me and my children gag until we could gag no more. Bat wings. (teryaki chicken wings but the marinade was dyed green and purple.)

Top this off with some delicious seeping blood

Served in a spooky goblet

Oh, and we can't forget dessert.

Bones

Pumpkin patch cupcakes (for those like me with a weak constitution and my children that inherited that same weak stomach)

And kitty litter cake

My mom and my aunt stayed up all night perfecting the perfect kitty poop. I can just imagine the giant belly laughs they had over making the perfect Tootsie Roll poo. Granted, if I had a cat, I think I would clean out the litter box a lot more often than is perceived in this picture.

So you know, I ate a strip of the mummy loaf and a small pile of Jell-O in the other room. My good sport of a husband tried to convince my children that it was just the cheese sauce that mommy made on the vegetables. They both however had major gag reflexes and physically could not eat the food. This was one night mommy didn't insist on them eating their vegetables. They had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the other room. Hey, if mommy can't do it, her kids don't have to either. Lucky for my mom, the rest of the family was in better form than we were. Thanks for the fun mom!!!

That was totally gross! (I love it)
How did you keep your lunch down? I'm not pregnant and I about gagged just looking at everything- especially the cat poop stuff. Tootsie rolls will never taste the same to me.
What a fun, fun tradition!

I always think of your family around Halloween. Your family tradition of decorating the yard and the home made rootbeer is awesome. I know we always looked forward to going to your house on halloween just to see what was going on.

I was not completely grossed out until the kitty litter. I would not have been able to eat anything but the jello though. Yuck. I can't believe that is an annual tradition....gag!!! I will stick to chili.

I am sorry, but...WHAT THE HELL WERE THOSE BAT WINGS? I was fine with the "cleverness" everything else. Those did me in--truly disgusting!

I am with the Rookie...what are those?

Sounds like the party was great fun and totally fits your mom perfectly. I can totally picture her and your aunt (any one of them) belly laughing about the tootsie rolls. Classic!

Your poor daughters...

I want to be invited next year...hint hint :)

I don't think I could have eaten it either, and I'm not even pregnant! Ooh, you did good (or bad!) with those rat brains. It looked so gross! Also, the bat wings and blood punch were making me gag! LOL!

Your family is so festive and clever! :)

That was gross and awesome at the same time. It has been awhile since I have had that specific combo from a blog post. Thanks!
