Calling All Decorators

First on the potty training front...not going so well. I almost pulled my hair out today. Thank goodness for a Grandma that realizes when mom has reached the end of the rope. We are taking a break and the kiddies are happily spending the night at Grandmas...WaHOO!!! Fresh start tomorrow...thanks Mom!

Okay, I need help. I know that there are an awful lot of closet interior decorators out there...I am talking to you. We have lived in our house for 18 months and I have conquered a lot of decorating, but not as much as I would have liked to by now. Especially in this room. This is my little girl's bedroom. Yes, it is pink, and yes, there is one queen size bed. How very "Little House on the Prarie" of us. We figure that they will end up in the same bed or in our bed, why not let them snuggle each other, they love it! Back on track...this room. I wanted that "Shabby Chic", cottagy look to the room. The furniture is distressed white and we have the eyelet bedding as well as some cabbage rose bedding and accessories. This my friends, is where I draw my blank. I don't have a clue as to what to do above the bed or what to do on the dresser. I know that I want a crochet rag rug on the floor, but beyond that, I am hopeless.

If you have ANY suggestions, I would be most appreciative. I am ready for this room to be finished and have that polished/done look.

Oh, and the pictures are a little dark because I took them later than I had planned on. The pink in the room is usually more subtle.

Have at it ladies!!!

I was recently in a display home where the little girls' room had dresses painted on the wall--they looked like paper doll clothing, with the 'tabs' drawn on and everything. Very cute. If you drew or hung actual slips, vintage dresses, etc on a drawn or hung 'clothesline', that would be precious. My friend is very fond of hanging small chairs on the wall, too, to use as shelving for precious dolls or stuffed animals.

Do you have a large print of the girls from the baby days? If you have a negative of a great (well, they were all great, right?!) photo, take it in and have it printed in sepia shades. Print an 11x14, mat it at a larger size and frame.

What a pretty room and a fun project. Have fun! C

How about a white shear canopy over the bed. My daughter has one that hangs on one hook from the ceiling then drapes around the headboard of the bed. It really adds a lot to her room's look and she loves it!

For the dresser, I was thinking maybe some type of flowery applique that you could stick on the drawers! They have some that you can just rub onto the surface, or you could even stencil and paint it on!

I'll try to think of some more ideas! LOL I love decorating my daughter's room!

Good Luck

Ewww... I really like cmommy's suggestions. The little chairs on the wall and the sephia colored pics would be so cute!

Sorry I can be of no service to you. The room already looks more decorated than my whole house. Oh, how I wish I would have gotten a little bit of the decorating gene.

Your mom is awesome for taking the kids!

That room definately needs some flowers in it...dried, kinda faded ones. I saw a wrought iron wall hanging thingy that was shaped like an old fashioned bicycle that would look great in there. I love the vintage clothing idea. You could use old tea towels or hankies for window dressing, just hang them on a bit of twine like a clothes line. THe more embroidery the better. I've also seen them tacked together on just the corners to make a bigger peice of fabric. You MUST update when you put it all together!

I just clicked to see the other suggestions. I really have no idea how to decorate.

I think it looks darling so far! I love all of cmommy's suggestions! Also, maybe if you got some little frames to hang on the wall or little white shelves to put knick-knacks on like framed vintage postcards, old jewelry boxes, maybe even an old vintage hat on an old hat stand for the top of the dresser, etc.

Perhaps a small vintage style quilt hanging on one of the walls. BTW I shared a bed with my sister when we were little. It was really kinda fun, especially when one of us had a bad dream, there was always someone right there beside us when we woke up.

Sharing a bed with a sister is not a bad thing! We giggled ourselves to sleep when we were little.

CMommy has got it! I love those ideas!

I'm decorationally challenged...My idea of decorations in a room consists of family pictures. And I don't think your daughters want pictures of their family all over their walls! Why not ask them what they want to add to the room? Sometimes kids can surprise you!! Good luck! :)

Phew! You guys don't think I am weird for putting them in the same bed. I get a lot of strange looks for that, I am used to being defensive about it.

Keep the ideas coming!!!

I asked her and the answer did surprise me. She wants a big, dark purple poster above her bed, oh and she wants to paint the room royal blue. Nice.

Sorry about the Potty bootcamp going slow. Yay! for moms taking the kids.

I'm with Gabriela, that room alone is more coordinated and decorated than anything at my house.
Wish I had bright ideas, but alas, I'm but a No Cool Story.

Post a pic of the finished room. Pretty please?

Girls, I came back to the comments to see the fabulous ideas and I was not disappointed!! Now I want to redo LilDollyGirl's room! :-)

Steph, you must keep us visually updated on this project! Also, I've been warned by my friend, the mother of two teen daughters, to enjoy the girly-girl stuff while I can--all too soon, the Mod Squad takes over, lol! C

OK I thought you were going off blogging so obviously i've missed out. I like the idea of black and white photos, (of you kids) in white frames collaged above the bed. Or three of them hanging from door knob hooks. Look through PBK for ideas (did you get my long e-mail btw? I told you all about me and PBK? just checking since I didn't hear back)
OK back to your room. I of COURSE like Kara's idea...I'd be carefully taking the chair rail off (you can, there's a special tool for removing molding. You still have to be careful but then you can use the piece again) I would put up bead board...the good stuff. I figured out it's only $1.25 more/foot. To do my entire girls room at 32" height will be less than $150. (their room is approx 10x10) I love Kara's idea for a chadelier instead of a light...there's a really cool one from Pottery Barn Teen. It's white and very "shabby chic"

BTW LOVE the dresser...where did you get it?

I agree with the others. I'm about as far from an interior decorator as you can get, but FWIW, I *love* the look of the furniture and bed. I think the only thing missing is wall decor that compliments the flowers. Perhaps a delicate stenciled border near the celing and some wall hangings? I like the ideas for simple things that aren't too busy.

I completely imagined a picture of two little girls having a picnic teaparty in white dresses, wide brimmed hats with ribbons and white lace gloves, over the bed.

I would also vote for some flowers on the dresser, even if they are in an embroidered runner for the top.

Lace curtains for the window. Here is a tip, the longer the curtain the more formal the look. If you are going more cottagesque I would keep the curtains the same length as the window.

Honestly that is all that I would add. Simplicity is easier to keep dusted. ;)

Wow! What great ideas you've gotten. I have nothing to add. What a fun, pretty room.

I also don't think the sharing the bed thing is weird. My sister and I shared one for years. Half the time I find my girl's in each others beds anyways!
