Hair Today

*****edited*****

5-26-06 This is todays do. We call this the "lattice ponytails". I hope you are all having fun with different ways to do hair. Also, here is T's hair today. Two braids pulled into a bow. Gotta love girly hair!

Gabriela gave me a FAB idea for a post!!! Little girls hairstyles. I am so glad I had little girls, I LOVE doing their hair. These are my tools, a spray bottle, a rat-tailed comb (for parting), a short-pronged comb (perfect for grabbing and smoothing hair for braids), rubber bands, hair spray, ribbons and a straight iron. I am not sure how these will post on blogger, so please have patience with me.

At our house we call this first do a "knot". You pull the hair into a ponytail, make it smooth. I use my rat-tail comb and part under the ponytail, keep the comb there and pull it up. take the ponytail by the base and tuck the hair under the rubberband. Grasp the hair in the ponytail, separate it and pull it tight. Comb the hair smooth. I apologize for the blurred final on this one, M was telling me an exciting story with lots of hand movement. I will sometimes do 3-5 of these going across the front of her head.

Next is the upside down French braid across her crown. M has a definate part on the left side of the head, so a lot of the time we will start it there like we did in this picture.

This one is my favorite for camping. We will leave it in the whole time because it keeps her baby hairs out of her face. We call this "doo" smocking. You basically part the hair into blocks, band it and then separate each ponytail in halfs and add it to the next block.

-I am not sure what order these ones post in but the white dress photo is her hair pulled up from her part to her ear &
then curled with a straight iron. (to curl the hair, you hold the hair in the iron like you were curling ribbon on scissors)
-Two ponytails pulled into one ponytail.
We do another variation of this with two braids pulled into a pony tail or pulled into each other and the rest of the hair down
-Two French braids to her crown. I like to use the upside down
version on her hair because it pulls back all of her baby hairs, on her little sister, we use the regular version
-The pink bow photos is my favorite "doo". I pull her hair into two ponytails and curl them. I then take another rubberband and pull the ponytail through that again and on the LAST time I only pull it half-way through. I rat the ends and tie a bow under it.

The best tips I can offer are these:
-Start with wet hair, not too wet. That is why I have the spray bottle. It is easier to get it more wet, it is harder to dry it.
-Comb the ponytails smooth before you band them. I LOVE smooth ponytails.
-Spray the ponytails with hairspray before you band them, keeps the "fuzz" down.
-Part the hair with a comb. Brushes don't do the job like a comb does.
-Keep the ponytails close to the head. They fall out if they are pulled away.
-Use "ouchless" rubberbands. They are cheap enough that you can throw them away when you are done. See the below post on how to store them.

We do a lot more hairstyles than these. I will take pictures and post them as we do them. M was such a good sport to let me manhandle her head like that, but I didn't want to push my limits!

I must say Steph, I am impressed! My girls hair NEVER looked that good unless I bring them to the local hair salon for a special treat. Those styles are beautiful...you have quite a talent. And your daughter sits still for that? priceless! :)

You are a terrific hairdresser and your girls are gorgeous!

I was never that great at doing my girls hair, but my girls can do amazing tings.

We had a family in our ward whose girls always came to church with outstanding hairdos. It turns out that their Daddy di it. He was a wizard with the frnch braids too.

Wow! that's cool!, I tried to do the "doo" smocking once on my daughter's hair and failed miserably :(

I'm not very crafty, if it has to do with glue, sewing or hair, I'm terrible at it.

I agree with txmommy, your girls are lucky.

SIGH.. Slightly jealous because I've got two boys...no ponytails to speak of.

I love the hair styles. I will have to try them on my girls, but how do you get your girls to sit through it without complaining the whole time? All I ever hear is "OWWWWW! You're hurting me!"

Great post.

Fabulous! I'm so glad you posted on this! After seeing all your hair thingy storage I KNEW you must be a master at hair. I've resorted to hairstyles they can comb themselves with my girls. But on Sundays and special occassions I may try some of these! Thank you for sharing!

Steph, you are awesome. I can't believe you did this post so quickly! Thank you so much.

I felt so guilty yesterday when Margarita came home from playing with a girlfriend and her hair was "done". Her friend's mom probably feels sorry for her!

But, now with your help, I am going to attempt some new do's (this is misleading, implies that we have "old" do's which is not really true :)). I'll post some pics at some point.

Thanks again!

I envy your talent. I just let my girls brush their own hair. My oldest gets in to doing her hair into some really cute things but I don't have the patients to do that.

I love the hairdo's. I'm lucky too, because my girls sit still so I can play with their hair. I still haven't mastered the french braid though.

You are so talented...not to mention a SAINT for fixing your daughters' hair like that! :) I'm feeling a bit out of the loop tho...I have a son with buzzed hair...don't think these styles would fly with him! :D

Wow, my girls will hardly keep a pony tail in for 15 minutes. They look fab! You go, girl!

wow!

I remember the days when Birdie used to let me do her hai... but I was NEVER this cool. Now all my girls want is "plain ole'" hair.
meh.

Just saw your eyebrow comment. I don't know what to tell you, luckily Margarita's haven't joined yet. Plucking and waxing are out, too painful. One of those facial bleaching kits???? :)

I will be in Utah for a few days this summer. I could do something July 21 or 22. Let me know! That would be fun.

I LOVE doing my daughter's hair. Unfortunately, she does not. We'll see if Sasha is different!

Oh my GOSH. SO cute. This may be the reason that God has not granted me with girls. I wouldn't have the first idea on how to do their hair at ALL!

Actually, last night a dad of one of the girls in our Young Women class asked me if I could please braid his daughter's hair before her orchestra concert because her mom didn't have time and she was really stressed about it. I couldn't do it! I wouldn't have the first idea of what to do, lol.

I found someone to do it though which was good because the 12 year old was getting all teary. Poor little girl!

so fun- too bad i only have smart boys-- although they have a stinking lot of hair!

The lattice is kind of like criscross smocking. I need hair fairly wet to do this style. Start with her hair parted in half (this is where it helps to have it wet, the part stays better). Make two ponytails. Block off under one ponytail pull it as if you were going to put it into a pony tail. Take the opposite upper ponytail and join it to the new one you have made. Do the same with each side until you reach the bottom. You can make the hair look like it is really weaved or you can do it like I did it today with one "snake" running under the other. I don't really know if this makes sense. Next time I do her hair like this, I will post step-by-steps.
